Tune: Mountain Hawthorn
Ouyang Xiu
Last year on this moonlit spring night,
Lanterns in Flower Fair were bright.
The moon rose above the willow tree,
At dusk he had a tryst with me.
This year on the same moonlit night,
The moon and lanterns are as bright.
Where is my beloved of last year?
My sleeves are wet with tear on tear.
Ouyang Xiu (1007—1072) was the vice-premier who made important contribution to the development of literature during the Northern Song Dynasty (960—1127), but who repre-sented higher achievement in prose than in poetry. This poem depicts a young woman waiting in vain for her beloved on the night of the Spring Moon Festival or Lantern Festival, that is, the 15th day of the first month by the lunar calendar.
