情性亻刍[1];
比旧时肥瘦;
一个仕女班头;

Scene 2 Rose in The Dock
Madame Cui enters with her adopted son,Happy Boy,and says:
Yingying seems absent-minded and preoccupied these days, and her figure appears different. What is the matter with her?
Happy Boy says:
The other night when you were asleep,I saw my sister and Rose go to burn incense in the garden and not come back before midnight.
Madame Cui says:
Go and call Rose to come here.
(Happy Boy calls Rose.)
Rose enters and says:
What are you calling me for,my Young Master?
Happy Boy says:
My mother has learned that you and my sister have been to the garden and she wants to question you.
Rose says:
Alas!My Young Mistress,you have compromised me!Go ahead,my Young Master,and I will come immediately.
A pair of lovebirds sleep on water green;
A parrot sees them through wind-opened screen.
She sings to the tune of FIGHT OF QUAILS:
If you had gone by night
And come back with daylight,
Your joys might be secure
As long as sky and earth endure.
But you would bring fresh shower
Each night for the thirsting flower,
And often make me feel in the wrong,
Gnawed by an anxiety strong.
You should have gone and come back by starlight.
Who’d have allowed you to sleep there all night?
Do you not know our Mistress’ingenious mind
Rather unkind?
She could see honeyed words through.
Even when there’s nothing wrong, she would make much ado.
Tune: VIOLET FLOWER
She would suspect the scholar has become bridegroom
And you,my Young Mistress, his wife in golden room,
And I have pulled the string.
Seeing your eyebrows fresh as spring
And eyes as autumn water bright,
She’d guess all right.
If she just tries
To button up your robe and measure your girdle green
And compare it with the size
Of your former figure she has seen,
She’s sure to find
You’re lovely and coquette of a different kind.
She says:
I feel almost sure when I appear before my Mistress, she will say:“O you little wretch!”
She sings to the tune of GOLDEN BANANA LEAVES:
I ordered you to follow her wherever
She went and keep an eye on her and never
Lose sight of her. What made you lead her stray
From the right way?”
If I am thus addressed.
O what in my defence have I to say?
She says:
Then I will simply tell her,“I have never dared to deceive you since my very childhood,my respectful Mistress.”
She continues to sing:
Then of the whole affair I will make a clean breast.
She says:
What had I to gain from their liaison?
She sings to the tune of SONG OF FLIRTATION:
Their heads were close together like two flowers;
A pair of happy phoenixes loved their fill.
I stood alone outside the window of the bower,
In early morning hours
My broidered shoes on mossy ground felt icy chill.
Now my delicate skin will be beaten black and blue.
What wrong has a go-between done in a rendezvous?
She says:
Well,I am off,my Young Mistress. If I can explain matters to the satisfaction of my old Mistress,do not be overjoyed. If not,do not be overan noyed.Just stay there and wait for the news.
(Rose appears before Madame Cui.)
Madame Cui says:
You little wretch! Why don’t you kneel down?Won’t you confess your guilt?
Rose says:
Your maid knows of no guilt to confess.
Madame Cui says:
How dare you deny it!If you tell the truth,I will pardon you;if not,I will beat you to death, you little wretch!Who allowed you to go with your Young Mistress to the garden at midnight?
Rose says:
I did not go there.Who did see me?
Madame Cui says:
Happy Boy saw you.How dare you still deny it!
(She beats Rose.)
Rose says:
Please withdraw your noble hand,my Mistress.Do not be angry and listen to what I have to say.
She sings to the tune of THREE TERRACES:
When we had finished our sewing at night,
We talked about her elder brother’s plight.
We thought it was her due
To inquire after his health without telling you.
Madame Cui says:
To inquire?What did he say?
Rose continues to sing:
“Your Mistress returned evil for good”,he said,
“And turned to grief my pleasure vain.”
He told me,“Rose,to go ahead”,
And said“my Young Mistress should alone remain.”
Madame Cui says:
Ah!You wretch! How could an unmarried maiden remain there alone!
Rose sings to the tune of A BALD HEAD:
I thought she’d cure him with needle divine.
Who knew like mating swallows they’d have done?
They’ve slept together over a month, rain or shine.
Why need you go into details one by one?
Tune: KING OF MEDICINE
They know neither grief nor sorrow;
They know today but not tomorrow.
They love each other soul and heart;
They cannot bear to be torn apart.
My Mistress, overlook the matter if you can.
This is not an affair for you to probe or scan.
Madame Cui says:
It is you, little wretch, who are to blame.
Rose says:
It is neither Master Zhang nor Miss Yingying nor Rose who is to blame. The fault is yours,Madame.
Madame Cui says:
You little wretch! How dare you shift the blame to me!How can it be my fault?
Rose says:
It is fundamental for a man to keep faith. One who does not is not worthy of the name of a man. When the Salvation Monastery was surrounded by the bandits, you promised to give your daughter as wife to anyone who could make the bandits withdraw. If Master Zhang had not been an admirer of the beauty of my Young Mistress, would he,an outsider, have proposed a plan to such an effect? When the bandits retreated and you were left in peace, you repented and went back on your words. Was not this a breach of faith?Unwilling to approve the match, you should have rewarded him with money and made him go far,far away.It was wrong of you to keep him in the library near the Young Lady’s abode,so that the lonely maiden and bachelor had a chance to meet each other. If you did not cover up this scandal,in the first place, the family honor of the late Prime Minister would be compromised. In the second place, you would do wrong to Master Zhang who had done us good.In the third place,if you appealed to the court, you would be the first to be blamed for having not taken good care of the family. In my humble opinion,it would be far better to forgive the wrong he had done and not to return evil for good, but to fulfil the promise you have made to unite them as man and wife.
She continues to sing:
The proverb says:Don’t keep in the household
A maiden who is growing old!
Tune: A POCKMARKED FACE
One of them is a leading light;
The other is a lady fair and bright.
One knows the secular and divine;
The other drawing and embroidery fine.
Tune: A SECOND SONG
When things appear
Good far and near,
Don’t interfere!
Why make an enemy of a good friend
Who sent for General on White Horse to defend
The family and make the trouble put an end?
Tune: SPINNER
Why turn a benefactor into an enemy
And bring disgrace to your own family?
She’s after all your flesh and blood,
Over which you should brood.
Madame Cui says:
What the little wretch has said is reasonable. It is my misfortune to have brought up this unworthy daughter. If the case were brought to the court,it would bring disgrace to our family.Well, well! Our family had no guilty man nor remarried woman. What can I do now but give my daughter to the beast!Rose,go and tell Yingying to come here!
Rose,calling Yingying,says:
My Young Mistress! The rod was brandished over me like a threatening shower.Fortunately I was spared by speaking straight. Now my Mistress asks you to go over.
Yingying says:
How dare I,so overwhelmed with shame, see my mother face to face?
Rose says:
Ah,my Young Mistress, you are at it again. You need not feel ashamed before your own mother. If you do,how could you have dared to do what you did?
She sings to the tune of RED PEACH BLOSSOM:
You had your tryst with Master Zhang as soon
As over the top of willows rose the moon.
Ashamed,I hid my face amid willow leaves
And bit with my teeth into my sleeves.
When I turned my eyes on you,
I saw before the bed but your delicate shoes.
In bed he was loving his fill;
Silent, you let him have his will.
Why did you not feel shame
With your cheeks all in flame?
(Yingying meets her mother.)
Madame Cui says:
My dear child!
(Madame Cui weeps.)(Yingying weeps.)(Ose weeps.)
Madame Cui says:
My dear child, you have been wronged, but this was my fault. How could I blame anyone else?If I appealed to the court,it would bring disgrace to your late father. How could a prime minister’s daughter have done such a thing!
(Yingying weeps bitterly.)
Madame Cui says:
Rose, help your Young Mistress.Well, well, what can I do with an unworthy daughter!Go to the library,Rose, and tell that beast to come.
(Rose calls Master Zhang.)
Master Zhang says:
Who is calling me?
Rose says:
Your affair has been discovered. My Mistress is calling for you.
Master Zhang says:
How can I get out of the difficulty?Miss Rose, will you please screen me a little?I wonder who would have told Madame this.I am so fearful that I dare not go to see her.
Rose says:
Don’t appear fearful but put on a bold air and go to see her at once.
She sings to the tune of A SECOND STANZA:
What leaked out could not be screened with success,
So at once I had to confess.
My Mistress now would entertain you with wine and tea.
Why should you anxious be?
Betrothal may not be arranged by a go-between.
Am I a chaperon obscene?
You look like a silver spear-head,
But in fact it is made of lead.
(Master Zhang meets Madame Cui.)
Madame Cui says:
Fine scholar as you are, have you not heard that deeds unworthy of the ancient sages should not be done?If I should hand you over to the court, that would bring disgrace to my family. There is left only for me to marry my daughter to you.But for three generations past our family has never had a son-in-law who had no official rank.So you must go to the capital to attend the civil service examinations.I will take care of your future wife.If you pass the examinations with honor, come back and marry my daughter. If not,do not come to see us!
(Master Zhang remains silent, kneels and makes his bows.)
Rose says:
Thank Heaven and Earth, and thanks to my Mistress!
She sings to the tune of JOY OF EASTERN PLAIN:
Your love affair
Has been forgiven.
Your eyebrows knit with care
May now be riven.
Your lovesickness
Ends in your happiness.
O who would not embrace
Such a delightful maiden with a lovely face!
Madame Cui says:
Rose, give orders for the luggage to be packed and wine and viands to be prepared so that we may see Master Zhang off at the Pavilion tomorrow and give him a fare-well feast.
Yingying sings:
Send word to riverside green willow trees
To see the rider off in vernal breeze!
(Exit Madame Cui with Yingying.)
Rose says:
Master Zhang,do you feel happy or sad?
She sings to the tune of EPILOGUE:
We must just wait till you come back again,
When flutes and drums will enliven the scene,
And like two lovebirds you are joined in twain,
Then I’ll receive your reward for a go-between
And drink a cup of wine
For your union divine.
(Exeunt.)
