松了金钏;
不由人熬熬煎煎的气;
只索要昏昏沉沉的睡;

Scene 3 Farewell Feast
Madame Cui enters and says:
We are going to see Master Zhang start for the Capital today, and Rose has gone to tell my daughter to come with us to the Pavilion of Farewell.I have ordered a feast prepared and an invitation sent to Master Zhang, and I think he must have finished his packing by now.
Yingying enters with Rose and says:
We are going to see him off today. It is sad to say good-bye at any time, and how much sadder on a late autumn day!
Master Zhang enters and says:
Madame told me last night to go to the Capital for the civil service examinations. She would marry her daughter to me if I came back with an official rank. What can I do but go as she directed. Now I am starting for the Pavilion of Farewell to wait for the Young Lady so that I may bid her farewell.
(Exit.)
Yingying says:
We drink a cup of wine whether we part or meet;
No matter where he goes, the rider must be fleet.
She sings to the tune of CALM DIGNITY:
With clouds the sky turns grey
O’er yellow-bloom-paved way.
How bitter blows the western breeze!
From north to south fly the wild geese.
Why like wine-flushed face is frosted forest red?
It’s dyed in tears the parting lovers shed.
Tune: ROLLING BALL
It’s my regret
So late we met;
It grieves my heart
So soon to part.
Long as the willow branch may be,
It cannot tie his parting steed to the tree.
What would I not have done
If autumn forest could hang up the setting sun!
Go slowly,parting steed;
Cab,follow it with speed!
Of lovesickness just cured,
The grief of parting must now be endured.
“I’m going,”when a voice is heard to say,
My body seems to waste away.
When the Pavilion of Farewell comes in sight,
My bracelet becomes no longer tight.
Rose says:
You have not made your toilet today,my Young Mistress.
Yingying says:
How can you know the feelings of my heart,Rose!
She continues to sing:
Who knows,who knows
My heart full of woes?
Tune: MURMURING SONG
Seeing the cab and steed ready to start,
How can I not feel grief and anguish gnaw my heart?
How can I rouge my cheeks and powder my face,
Adorn myself with winning charm and grace?
What can I do is but to bury deep
My head between my coverlet and pillow and sleep,
And let my hundred-folded dress with flowing sleeves
Drowned in a stream of tears no one perceives.
O what unconsolable grief!
O what unconsolable grief!
Could words and letters bring me any relief?
(Madame Cui,Yingying and Rose arrive at the Pavilion of Farewell.)
(Master Zhang salutes Madame Cui profoundly.)
(Yingying turns her face away.)
Madame Cui says:
Come nearer,Master Zhang. Now that you are my flesh and blood, there is no need for you to avoid my daughter.Come over here and meet him,my dear child!
(Master Zhang and Yingying meet each other.)
Madame Cui says:
Sit down,Master Zhang.I will sit here and my child there.Pour out wine,Rose.Drink up this cup,Master Zhang.Since I have promised to marry my daughter to you,you must go to the Capital and prove yourself worthy of our family and win the highest honor in the examinations.
Master Zhang says:
Though not born a literary talent or brilliant scholar,I will do my best, depending on the favor and fortune of your honorable family,to win the highest honor in the examinations so that the Young Lady may be ennobled m due course.
(They all sit down.)
(Yingying sighs.)
Yingying sings to the tune of DOFFING THE CLOTHES:
The west wind drives the withered leaves here and there;
Decayed in mist, the grass has chilly, foggy air.
I see him sit at table, slanting his head,
Knitting his brows,as if half-dead.
Tune: SMALL LIANGZHOU
He dare not let his tears fall from his brimful eyes
For fear his grief be known.
Seeing himself observed,he utters sighs,
Pretending to arrange his white silk gown.
Tune: PETTY SONG
Though we’ll be man and wife in future years,
How can I now refrain from shedding tears?
My mind with him infatuated,
My heart with love intoxicated.
Just overnight
My slender waist has grown more slight.
Tune: ASCENDING THE ATTIC
Our joy of union not complete,
Our grief of parting comes so fleet.
You know how much for you I cared.
It was not till last night was our love declared.
But oh,today
You’ll go away!
Having suffered from lovesickness on those days,
I know not parting grief still ten times heavier weighs.
Madame Cui says:
Help your Young Mistress to pour out wine,Rose.
(Yingying pours out wine.)
(Master Zhang sighs.)
Yingying whispers:
Drink up this cup of wine I hold in my hand.
She sings to the tune of PETTY SONG:
While young,
One makes light of a farewell long;
Light-hearted,
Lovers do not care to be parted.
Canst thou forget thy leg across mine,
My cheek against thine,
Hand in hand we combine.
The former Premier’s son-in-law-to-be,
Thy noble wife would ennoble thee
Like one stem with twin lotus-flowers,
Far better than to win honor and power.
(Yingying sits down again at the table and sighs.)
She sings to the tune of COURTYARD FULL OF FRAGRANCE:
So quickly passes the feast.
We sit now face to face;
We’ll then be west and east.
If Mother were not in her place,
We might have enjoyed a bridal meal alone.
Although the time will soon pass by,
It might be called a dinner of our own.
In vain I center on him my eye,
Keep thinking on,And nearly turn into a stone.
Madame Cui says:
Pour out wine,Rose.
Rose, pouring out a cup for Master Zhang and another for Yingying, says:
You have not had breakfast this morning,my Young Mistress. Will you please drink a little?
Yingying sings to the tune of HAPPY THREE:
They offer me both food and wine,
Which taste like muddy water’neath the feet:
As mud the food is not so fine;
As water the wine is not so sweet.
Tune: HOMAGE TO EMPEROR
Even warmed wine as cold as ice appears,
It is diluted with my lovesick tears.
Not that I will not eat the food before my eyes;
But that my stomach’s filled with grief and sighs.
For fame as empty as the horn of a snail,
For profit trifling as the head of a fly,
Two love-birds torn apart bewail.
One here, the other there,we’re giving sigh for sigh.
Tune: FOUR-SIDE TRANOUILLITY
They remove in a moment dish and cup,
The cab goes down, the horse goes up.
Both linger till
The sun sinks behind the bar of a green hill.
Who knows tonight where thou shalt be?
Even in dreams I cannot find thee.
Madame Cui says:
Rose, bid them to get ready the carriage and request Master Zhang to mount his horse.I am going back with your Young Mistress.
(They all get ready to start.)
(Master Zhang makes his bow to Madame Cui.)
Madame Cui says:
I have no other wish but that you should win high rank and come back soon.
Master Zhang,thanking her,says.
I will obey your instructions.
(Master Zhang and Yingying bow to each other.)
Yingying says:
You are going now.Whether you win high rank or not,I just hope you will be back as soon as possible.
Master Zhang says:
Make yourself easy on that score,my dear Young Lady.To which family will the highest literary honor belong if not to yours?I must bid you farewell now.
Yingying says:
I have no other farewell gift for you but an impromptu quatrain:
Now left alone, what can I say,
I whom you loved deep night and day?
Do not bestow your love of old
Upon another whom you behold!
Master Zhang says:
You mistake me,my dear Young Lady! How could I bestow my love on anyone else but you?As I am in a confused state of mind and you may not believe what I say,I will not respond to your poem until I come back with the highest literary honor.
Yingying sings to the tune of PLAYING THE CHILD:
My sleeves in crimson and tears of love are drowned;
I know more soaked are yours, those of the blue-gowned.
Eastward the oriole and westward the swallow flies;
Before you start I ask when you’ll return.
Although afar,still you will be before my eyes;
I’ll drink a cup of wine to show my deep concern.
Before I drink,my heart is drunk,
My eyes shed blood,in ash my feeling’s sunk.
Tune: LAST STANZA BUT FIVE
Before your arrival,get used to harsh climate;
When you pursue your way,in food be moderate!
Take care of your own health,
Which is a mine of wealth!
Early to bed on journey long in rainy days
And late to rise at country inn in wind and haze,
Riding in chilly autumn breeze,Uncared-for,you yourself should take your ease.
Tune: LAST STANZA BUT FOUR
To whom of my grief to complain?
Alone I know the pain.
Should I complain to Heaven?O,to what avail?
My tears would make the Yellow River overflow;
My grief would make three mountain peaks bend low.
At dusk I’ll lean on Western Tower’s rail
To watch the setting sun over ancient way
And withered willow trees along the bay.
Tune: LAST STANZA BUT THREE
Not long ago we came in laughter;
Alone I’ll be back shortly after.
Once home,I’ll dread
To see the curtained bed.
Last night in warm embroidered coverlet spring dwelt;
Tonight you’ll dream of counterpane where cold is felt.
Can I detain you any longer here?
You have mounted your steed now.
Both of us are in tear
With a knitted eyebrow.
Tune: LAST STANZA BUT TWO
I care not if your talent won’t build a career,
But fear you may give up the old wife for the new.
I wish wild geese and fish would bring your letters here.
While I shall send you tidings by the Phoenix Blue
O do not swear
You won’t come back unless you win the laurel crown!
Please note it down:
If you see elsewhere beauties fair,
Don’t linger any longer there!
Master Zhang says:
My dear, your words as precious as gold and jade are imprinted on my heart. We will meet again soon,so you need not be too sad.I am going now.
Holding back tears,I pretended to make bows;
Though feeling sad,I tried to unknit my brows.
Yingying says:
Not knowing that my heart is broken,
I’ll follow you in dreams unwoken.
(Exit Master Zhang.)
(Yingying sighs.)
Yingying sings to the tune of LAST STANZA BUT ONE:
Green hills and forests standing between him and me
Seem to extend a thousand li.
Thin mist and evening vapours screen him from my view.
No human voice is heard on sun-lit ancient way
But rustling of the crops in autumn wind and horse’s neigh.
I am reluctant to enter the cab,
So eager to have come with you;So slow to go back afar!
Madame Cui says:
Rose, help your Young Mistress to her carriage. The time is late.Let us go home.
Although to give way to my daughter I appear,
I’ve acted after all as proper mother dear.(Exit.)
Rose says:
Your mother’s carriage is a long way ahead. You must go back quickly.
Yingying says:
Rose, can you see where he is now?
She sings to the tune of THE LAST STANZA:
Surrounded by mountains east and west,
He flips his whip on sun-lit road.
All the world’s grief seems to fill my breast.
How can such a small cab bear such a heavy load!
(Exeunt.)
