性儿浃洽[7];

Scene 3 Repudiation
Rose enters and says:
When my Young Mistress ordered me to take her letter to Master Zhang, she pretended to assume a cool air,but actually she made a secret assignation with him in her poem.Since she did not tell me the truth,I will not give her away, but simply ask her to burn incense and see how she can humbug me when he comes.
( Respectfully)Will you go to burn incense,my Young Mistress?
Yingying enters and sings:
The evening breeze is heavy with fragrance of flowers;
The rising moon has brightened the deep, silent bowers.
Rose sings to the double tune of NEW WATER:
The evening breeze so cold has come through window screen;
The golden hooks have not kept up the curtains green.
The door is open to the evening haze,
The bower steeped in the sun’s departing rays.
Before her mirror in her boudoir my Young Mistress
Has just put on her evening dress.
Tune: HALTING THE HORSE
From bustle far away,
In the light-green pool the ducks sleep.
Beautiful is the day,
On the pale yellow willow-tree crows are perched deep.
She crushes peonies’young shoots with her small feet,
Her jade hairpin entangled in red flowers sweet.
Slippery is the mossy way,
Her stockings wet with pearls of dewdrops indiscreet.
She says:
My Young Mistress and Master Zhang seem impatient for the nightfall.
She sings to the tune of PSEUDO-MELODY:
Ever since sunrise
They have wearied their eyes.
For the rising moon,
A moment seems as long as the month of June.
Beyond the willow-trees now slowly sinks the sun,
They wish it buried by the Holy One.
Tune: ZITHER AND GUITAR
In bewitching attire,
She brings her cloud and rain to quench his flame and fire.
Seeing the orioles and swallows in pairs,
Could she not think of love affairs?
She will neither drink nor eat,
And looks more bashful and sweet.
Is she not true?
It is hard to construe,
And I’m not sure what to do.
She says:
My Young Mistress, will you please stand below the poolside rock?I will shut the side door lest we should be overheard.
(She looks outside the door.)
Master Zhang enters and says:
It is time to go there.
(He looks inside the door.)
Rose sings to the tune of INTOXICATED EAST WIND:
The evening crow
Amid the trees
Seems to shiver and throw.
Its shadow is in the breeze.
No,it’s the scholar,I guess,
In his black silk headdress.
Behind the winding balustrade he seems to hide;
With her back to the rock she stands by the poolside.
How can they interchange a word?
How can their speech be heard?
Master Zhang,embracing Rose,says:
My dear young lady!
Rose says:
You beast! It is I.Luckily the mistake is made with me.What if it were my Mistress!
She continues to sing:
Are you so eager
For an embrace?
That hungry and meager,
You see stars in my face!
She says:
Let me ask you once more if you were told to come here.
Master Zhang says:
I am a master in solving riddles, full of romance and gallantry. So I am sure to captivate her.
Rose says:
Don’t go through the door,or she will say I have let you in.You must climb over the wall, you see?Such a beautiful night is really good for a tryst.
She sings to the tune of PSEUDO-MELODY:
Behold! The fleecy cloud veiling the moon so bright
Serves as the shade of silver candle;
The weeping willows and flowers as window-screen
And verdant grass as spacious couch embroidered green.
Tune: SONG OF SWEET WATER
Beautiful is your nuptial night.
The court is tranquillized with leisure;
The blooming branches weighed down for your pleasure.
Knowing she is a maiden pure,
You must be gentle to allure
Her with caressing words and in your temper sweet.
Don’t take her for a flaunting flower you meet!
Tune: PICKING LAUREL
Like flawless jade she’s charming and full of grace.
Do you not see her lovely face
Exhaling spring,
And her cloudy hair waved like a raven’s wing?
But your worry and fear won’t worry me,
For I don’t hope from you a cup of wine or tea.
When you’re excited under the coverlet,
Your fingers may be tired and sweetened with her sweat.
When your sweat and hers blend,
Your worry comes to an end.
Your sorrow is no more,
And you’ll be ready to go on before.
(Master Zhang climbs over the wall.)
Yingying says:
Who is it?
Master Zhang says:
It is I.
Yingying calls:
Rose!
(Rose does not answer.)
Yingying says in anger:
Oh,Master Zhang! What kind of a man you are!Why have you come while I am burning incense?
Master Zhang says:
Ah!
Rose sings to the tune of FLOWERS ON BROCADE:
Why is a go-between free from worry and fear?
Skin to skin, man and wife of difference will be clear.
I’d better go
To listen on tiptoe.
One of them full of shame;
The other’s ired in flame.
Tune: A SECOND STANZA
One has nothing to say
The other’s changed her mind.
The one does silent stay;
The other chatters things unkind.
Rose,standing at a distance,says in a low voice:
Master Zhang, what has become of all your bold talk behind her back?Go on!If this is brought before the court,do you think you will be the only one to be disgraced?
She continues to sing:
You were full of romance and gallantry.
Where did they flee?
You clasp your hands and bow your head
As if you’re deaf and dumb,half-dead.
Tune: A CLEAR RIVER
You wag your tongue with none beside,
But you are cunning and crafty in vain.
Who would have thought by the poolside,
So different you would remain?
Yingying says:
Rose,there is a thief here!
Rose says:
Who is it,my Young Mistress?
Master Zhang says:
It is I,Miss Rose.
Rose says:
Who told you to come,Master Zhang? What is your business here?
(Master Zhang remains silent.)
Yingying says:
Drag him off to my mother’s place!
(Master Zhang remains silent.)
Rose says:
If we drag him off to my Mistress’place,it would unmake his reputation.Let me deal with him for you,my Young Mistress.Master Zhang, come here and kneel down. You have read the Books of Confucius,so you should understand the proper ways of behavior. What have you come here for at this late hour of night?
She continues to sing:
See what the lady fair and sweet
Will do with pretty fruit not good to eat!
Tune: WILD GEESE’S FALL
Not that as judges we wish to pose,
But something heartfelt I’d propose.
I thought your scholarship profound as the sea;
Who knows your lust amounts to bare audacity!
Tune: TRIUMPHANT SONG
You’ve come so late
At dead of night.
Do you want to steal sweet flowers by force?
You are a scholar bright.
Why don’t you go to jump over the Dragon’s Gate
But over the garden wall as mounting a horse?
Rose says:
Please forgive him once for my sake,my Young Mistress.
Yingying says:
We are bound to repay your kindness for saving our lives. But since we have become brother and sister, how can you have such a desire? What if my mother should know of this? Now for Rose’s sake I forgive you this time. But should it occur again, you will be dragged to my mother’s place without leniency.
Rose continues to sing:
Thanks to my Young Mistress, your mistake
Has been pardoned for my sake.
If we should bring before the court this case,
None could have saved your skin and face.
Yingying says:
Rose, remove the incense table and come in with me.(Exit.)
Rose,mocking Master Zhang,says:
For shame! For shame!Did you not say that you were a master in the art of solving riddles, full of romance and gallantry? From today on you may regard all your scheme as dead.
She sings to the tune of FAREWELL FEAST AND EPILOGUE:
Say not one night of love is worth as dear as gold.
Live ten years’single life more in your study cold!
You are a master in solving riddles, you say,
But mountains,not half-opened doors,stand in your way,
And bar you from the sight of dancing flowers,
And clouds overshadow the moon over the Western Bower.
You may powder your brazen face;
She’s painted her eyebrows with grace.
You poor wretch want to force a shower
Upon the thirsting flower.
Your audacity you should regret;
Your honeyed speech you should forget.
No more seductive verse
Nor any letter worse!
You have no chance
To boast of your romance.
My Mistress Young,
Do not be angry any more!
O Master Zhang,
Pursue your studies as before!
(Exeunt.)
