Scene 1 Mother’s Admonition

(Enter Lady Zhen.)

Zhen: “Not so good as yesterday today may appear,

But we grow older this year than last year.

Thinking of my daughter, I sighed.

How could she sit all day by window side?”

Having not been to my daughter’s room for a few days, I went to see her at noon, when I found her in low spirit, dozing lonely in her boudoir. She told me she felt tired after a stroll in the garden. Young maidens like her did not know the harm of visiting an unfrequented place in an attractive attire. It must be the maid Fragrant Spring who induced her to go there. Where is Fragrant Spring? (Enter Fragrant Spring.)

Fragrant: A maid can’t take a moment’s rest

Without being called east or west.

Madame, you have not gone to bed so late in the night?

Zhen: Where is your young mistress?

Fragrant: After your visit she felt drowsy and murmured herself to sleep. She must be dreaming now.

Zhen: Was it intentional for you to induce her to the garden? What if something harmful should happen?

Fragrant: I would not have dared to do so again.

Zhen: Listen!

(Sing to the tune ofConquering the Tartars):

A maiden should stay in her bower

To embroider grass or flower,

To do more needlework by window side

So as not to waste time and tide.

If she has leisure when lengthens the day,

She may have books to read and music to play.

Why go to the garden? For what need she?

Fragrant: In the garden there are fine sights to see.

Zhen: Fine sights are not so important as long sight. Don’t you know? Listen to me!

(Singing to the previous tune):

The garden when deserted is in vain too wide,

With crumbled walls and bowers side by side.

Even the middle-aged would hesitate

Whether they’d go there or just wait.

As for young maidens fair,

It would be lucky to be safe there.

Fragrant: What if unlucky?

Zhen: If there were anything wrong,

The trouble would last long.

Your young mistress did not take her supper today. Breakfast should be served earlier. Tell her what I say to you.

(They sing the Epilogue):

Zhen: The evildoers haunt the woods in wind and shower.

Fragrant: Still there goes the lover to seek for flower.

Zhen: A maiden is not proof against the vice.

Fragrant: She should listen to her mother’s advice.
