Requiem
While young, I was spotless and pure, oh!
To do what is right I was sure.
I served my lord with virtuous deeds, oh!
Entangled then amid vulgar weeds.
My lord of my deeds was not clear, oh!
I sufered and felt sad and drear.
The Lord God to the wizard said,
“To someone I’d give aid,
Whose soul’s dispersed below.
To help him you should go.”
The wizard said, “It seems
Hard to fulfil your dreams.
If you insist I should divine,
I’m afraid I could not decline.”
The wizard came down to play his role:
“Come back, O soul!
Why should you leave your breast
And roam north, south, east, west? oh!
Why desert your place of delight
And fall in a sad plight? oh!
O soul, come home!
Don’t eastward roam, oh!
The eastern giants are nine fathoms tall;
They seek and catch souls they enthral, oh!
Ten suns together shine,
Melting stone and metal fine, oh!
The giants are accustomed to the day,
But you souls would melt away, oh!
Come home, come home!
Don’t eastward roam, oh!
O soul, come back!
Don’t stay with southerners whose teeth are black!
They have tattooed forehead;
They sacrifice the flesh of the dead,
Whose bones are pounded to shred, eh!
There huge serpents defile,
And foxes run from mile to mile, eh!
The nine-headed snakes go
Swiftly to and fro
And swallow men high and low, eh!
Come back, come back!
Do not stay with those with teeth black, eh!
O soul, come back from the west vile
Where quicksands quake from mile to mile, eh!
If you fall in the thunderous whirlpool,
You would be swallowed by water cool, eh!
If you’re by luck not drowned,
You’ll find vast wilderness around, eh!
Where wasps are big as gourds; red ants
As huge as elephants, eh!
No grain grows there; man feeds
On dry and thorny reeds, eh!
The barren earth would make men rot;
No water could be got, eh!
You’ll find no shelter near at hand
In such a boundless land, eh!
Come back!
Don’t westward go,
Or you would fall in woe, eh!
O soul, come back, do not go forth!
You can’t stay in the north, eh!
Where ice rises pile on pile
And snowflakes fly from mile to mile, eh!
Come back! Do not go forth!
You cannot stay long in the north, eh!
O soul, come back! Don’t hie
Up to the sky, eh!
Where the man-eating tiger guards
The nine gates with leopards, eh!
The nine-headed monsters without cease
Pull up nine thousand trees, eh!
The wolves and jackels go
With hostile eyes to and fro, eh!
They hang out man for sport and throw
Him into the abyss below, eh!
They wait for orders from on high,
Then man may shut his eyes and die, eh!
Come back, come back at my call,
Or in danger you’ll fall, eh!
O soul, come back! Don’t go
To the Hell down below, eh!
Its guardian has nine tails;
The horn on his head ails, eh!
With shoulders huge and bloody thumb,
He pursues men, fearsome, eh!
His three-eyed tiger’s head
And bull-like body would cause dread, eh!
On human flesh he’d feed, eh!
Come hack! Don’t go below
Or you’ll be lost in woe, eh!
O soul, come back! Do not be late
To enter the capital’s gate, eh!
The wizard calling you will retreat
Backward to lead your feet, eh!
Basket and strings from east and west,
And central banners and the rest, eh!
Magic instruments ready one and all,
You hear the wizard’s wailing call, eh!
O soul, come on your backward road
To your former abode, eh!
No quarters of the world are paradise
But full of harm and vice, eh!
Think of the house of your own,
Quiet and reposeful up and down, eh!
Great halls and deep rooms on high ground
With railings on railings around, eh!
Pavilions and terraces far and nigh
Look on the mountains high, eh!
The lattice doors and crimson stairs
Are richly carved with squares on squares, eh!
Draughtless is the winter room;
The summer gallery is full of gloom, eh!
Streams murmur in and out
Of the gully and thereabout, eh!
The mililotus sway at ease
With lofty orchids steeped in breeze, eh!
The inner hall and rooms o’erspread
With floors and ceilings red, eh!
How bright the wall of polished stone looks
With hangings green on jasper hooks, eh!
The pearly kingfisher bedspread
Dazzles by the light those pearls shed, eh!
Walls are adorned with soft tapestries
And silken canopies, eh!
Ribbons of varied hues displayed
With precious stone and jade, eh!
The sight in inner room is fair
With decorations rare, eh!
The orchid-perfumed candles shine
On flower-like faces fine, eh!
Young ladies of sixteen are brights;
In turn they share your bed at night, eh!
Noble maidens come from many a land;
Above other beauties they stand, eh!
With rich and varied headdress tall,
They throng the palace hall, eh!
Each has an unsurpassed fair face
And an unrivaled grace, eh!
Each slender body stands straight,
Silent but intimate, eh !
Their lovable, amorous looks
Illumine nuptial chamber nooks, eh!
Their moth-like brows and eyes bright
Glisten with gleams of light, eh!
Their delicate flesh and soft skin
And seductive glances will ever win, eh!
In the tent or garden of pleasure,
They’re waiting for your leisure, eh!
In lofty hall there hang curtain and screen
Adorned with kingfisher feathers green, eh!
Red walls with panels are inlaid
As the roof-beams with jet and jade, eh!
O’erhead the carved rafters wake
With painted dragon and snake, eh!
Seated in the hall, leaning on railings, you
May have a winding pool in view, eh!
The lotus begins its blooming hours,
Mingled with caltrop flowers, eh!
The purple-stemmed plants with grace
Ripple green water’s face, eh!
Attendants in skins of leopard,
Ranged by the steps, stand guard, eh!
When you arrive in tilbury fine,
Footmen and riders wait in line, eh!
Orchids carpet the ground about the door,
With hibiscus hedge-row before, eh!
O soul, come back! Why stay
So far away? eh!
Your household pays homage at your shrine
With all kinds of food and wine, eh!
With yellow millet, early wheat and rice
Offered in your sacrifice, eh!
Salt, bitter, sour and pepper hot,
Honey sweet and what not, eh!
The fatted beefsteak is so well
Cooked that it gives a nice smell, eh!
If you like ginger or vinegar,
There’s soup of Southern connoisseur, eh!
You’ll find stewed turtle and roast kid again
Served up with sauce of cane, eh!
Swans cooked in sour sauce, ducks side by side
With geese and big cranes fried, eh!
Seethed tortoise and chicken braised,
Delicious, not to spoil your taste, eh!
Fried honey-cakes of rice
And malt-sugar sweetmeats nice, eh!
The jade-like wine fills up
The bird-shaped cup, eh!
After wine strained of dregs and ice-cold drink,
Into refreshening coolness you’d sink, eh!
A sumptuous feast is displayed
With wine which looks like jade, eh!
Come home where you may expect
Nothing wrong but respect, eh!
The feast is in full swing;
Fair maidens come and dance and sing, eh!
Drums are beaten and bells are rung,
And newly composed songs are sung, eh!
“Gathering Caltrops, ”“Crossing the Stream Wide, ”
And “Sunny Riverside, ” eh!
The beauties are drunk with wine;
Their rosy faces shine, eh!
Their flirting glances look
Like amorous waves in a brook, eh!
They are clad in silks fine,
Splendid without freak design, eh!
From chignon high falls their long hair
Adorned with jewels rare, eh!
The dancers in two rows of eight
Perform a dance of Central State, eh!
Their sleeves cross like bamboo stems
And come down bright with gems, eh!
In sound the pipes and zithers vie;
Thunderous drums run high, eh!
The palace walls tremble with fear
At the uproar they hear, eh!
Then songs are sung from west or east
And music played for the feast, eh!
Men sit by women’s side;
In disorder they hide, eh!
The belts and strings untied
Run riot far and wide, eh!
Fair dancers come from east or west
Sit together with the guest, eh!
The songstress singing best
Finds favor o’er the rest, eh!
Ivory chess with chips of jade,
The game of six pieces is played, eh!
The two divided sides commence
Their attack and defence, eh!
It’s hard to win his fight;
The winner cries, “Five White! ” eh!
He wins a rhino hook;
Bright as day it would look, eh!
Some strike the bell till its frame swings;
Some sweep the wooden zither’s strings, eh!
Without cease they make merry and drink
Till days into nights sink, eh!
Candles of orchid-perfumed fat shed light
On their stands of carved bronze so bright, eh!
Guests rack their brain to make songs new,
Sweeter than orchid blooms in view, eh!
Each has his weak points and his strong!
Together they make a better song, eh!
When their pleasure reaches its height,
They drink to the departed with delight, eh!
O soul, come on your backward road
To your former abode, eh!
Epilogue
In the new year begins spring day, oh!
I hurry on my southward way.
Green duckweed sprouts in rows, oh!
And white clover grows.
I pass by River Lu, oh!
To my left stretches water blue.
I go along the waterside, oh!
And see an expanse far and wide.
The four black horses go along, oh!
Before a thousand chariots strong.
The wood is burned and flames rise high, oh!
A pall of smoke darkens the sky.
The footmen follow on the way, oh!
And vie to lure the hunted prey.
The steed is reined, the prey in sight, oh!
The chariot is turned to the right.
In Dream Lake with the king I’d race, oh!
To see who would win the first place.
The king himself shoots at the head, oh!
Of a rhino which falls dead.
Dawn follows night on the run, oh!
Time and tide wait for none.
Covered by orchids and grass green, oh!
The waterside path can’t be seen.
Deep, deep the river flows at ease, oh!
On rivershores stand maple trees.
I gaze for miles and miles with longing eyes, oh!
For spring could I not heave deep sighs?
“O soul, come back to southern shore, oh!
Over your homeland can you not deplore? ”
