The Rise of Shang[1]

The sire of Shang was wise;

Good omens had appeared for long.

Seeing the deluge rise,

He helped Yu stem the current strong,

Extend the state’s frontier

And domain far and wide.

He was son born from Swallow queer

And Princess of Rong, its bride.

He held successful sway

Over states large and small.

He followedhis proper way

To inspect all and instruct all,

Xiang Tu, his martial grandson,

Ruled over land and sea he had won.

Heaven’s favor divine

Lasted down to the Martial King.

Toward his lords benign,

In praise of God he’d often sing.

His virtue grows day by day;

It is God he reveres.

God orders him to hold sway

And be model to the nine spheres.

He received ensigns large and small

From subordinate princes far and nigh.

He received blessings from gods all

For which he did not seek nor vie.

To lords he was nor hard nor soft;

His royal rule was gentle oft.

He received favors from aloft.

He received tributes large and small

From princes subordinate.

He received favors from gods all;

He showed his valor great.

Unshaken, he was fortified,

Unscared, unterrified.

All blessings came to his side.

His banners flying higher,

His battle-ax in his fist,

The Martial King came like fire

Whom no foe could resist.

Xie Jie was like the roots

Which could no longer grow

When he lost his three shoots,

Wei, Gu, kun Wu, Tang’s former foe.

The Martial King destroyed the brutes

And he ruled high and low.

In times when ruled King Tang,

There was prosperity for Shang.

Heaven favored his son

With Premier A Heng to run

The government and state

At left and eight of the prince great.

[1] This epic ode celebrated Qi the sire of Shang who helped King Yu of the Xia Dynasty to stem the deluge around 2200 B. C.; Xiang Tu his grnadson; Tang the Martial King who founded the Shang Dynasty; and Yi Yin or A Heng, Tang’s chief minister, on occasion of a great sacrifice when all the previous kings of the dynasty and the lords of Shang and their famous ministers were honored in the service, probably in the year 1713 B. C.
