With Broken Axe[1]
With broken axe in hand
And hatchet, our poor mates
Follow our duke from eastern land;
We’ve conquered the four States.
Alas! Those who are not strong
Cannot come along.
With broken axe in hand
And chisel, our poor mates
Follow our duke from eastern land;
We’ve controlled the four States.
Alas! Those who do not survive!
Lucky those still alive.
With broken axe in hand
And halberd, our poor mates
Follow our duke from eastern land
We’ve ruled o’er the four States.
Alas! Those who are dead!
Lucky, let’s go ahead.
[1]In 1125 B. C. the Duke of Zhou undertook an expedition against the four eastern states ruled by his own brothers Guan and Cai and Yah and the son of the last king of Shang. The battles were so fierce that many axes and hatchets were broken, and it took him three years to put down the rebellion.
