Like an Old Wolf[1]
The duke can’t go ahead
Nor at his ease retreat.
He’s good to put on slippers red
And leave the regent’s seat.
The duke cannot retreat
Nor with ease forward go.
He’s good to leave his seat
And keep his fame aglow.
[1]The Duke of Zhou was regent, in 1115 B. C., but he could neither advance nor retreat, for if he should advance, the rumor would spread that he would seize the throne; if he should retreat, the young king would be dethroned. He was like an old wolf Which would be hin dered by its dewlap in advancing and would tread on its own tail in retreating. The Duke left the regent’s seat and restored King Cheng to the throne in 1109 B. C.
