Incest[1]

To Duke Xiang of Qi

The southern hill is great;

A male fox seeks his mate.

The way to Lu is plain;

Your sister with her train

Goes to wed Duke of Lu.

Why should you go there too?

The shoes are made in pairs

And strings of gems she wears.

The way to Lu is plain;

Your sister goes to reign

And wed with Duke of Lu.

Why should you follow her too?

To Duke Huan of Lu

For hemp the ground is ploughed and dressed

From north to south, from east to west.

When a wife comes to your household,

Your parents should be told.

If you told your father and mother,

Should your wife go back to her brother?

How is the firewood split?

An axe can sever it.

How can a wife be won?

With go-between it’s done.

To be your wife she’s vowed;

No incest is allowed.

[1]This was a satire against Duke Xiang of Qi and Duke Huan of Lu. In 708 B. C. Duke Huan married a daughter of Qi, known as Wen Jiang. There was an improper afection between her and her brother, Duke Xiang; and on his succession to Qi, the couple visited him. The consequences were incest between the brother and sister, the murder of the husband and a disgraceful connection, long continued, between the guilty pair. In the first stanza, the great southern hill alluded to the great State of Qi and the male fox seek ing his mate alluded contemptuously to Duke Xiang seeking his sister who was going to wed Duke Huan of Lu. In the second stanza, the shoes and strings of gems made in pairs alluded to the union of man and wife. In the third stanza, the ground well prepared for hemp alluded to the preparations for marriage between Duke Huan and Wen Jiang. In the last stanza, the splitting of firewood was a formality in contracting a marriage during the Zhou dynasty.
