彼候人兮，
何[2]戈与祋[3]。
彼其之子，
三百赤芾[4]。
维鹈[5]在梁，
不濡其翼。

不遂其媾[7]。
荟兮蔚兮[8]，
南山朝[9]。
婉兮娈兮，
季女斯饥。
那个修路迎宾的小官啊，
扛着长弋和长棍。

三百多人穿着大红蔽膝的人。
只是鹈鸟在鱼梁上，
没有打湿它的翅膀。

不配他们的好衣裳。

不配他们的高官厚禄。
云雾弥漫啊，
南山早上升彩虹。
柔婉啊娇美啊，
幼小的女儿忍着饥饿。

[8] 荟蔚：云雾弥漫的样子。
[9] 朝（jī）：彩虹。
Poor Attendants[1]
Holding halberds and spears,
The attendants escort
The rich three hundred peers,
Wearing red cover-knee in court.
The pelicans catch fish
Without wetting their wings;
The peers have what they wish,
But they’re unworthy things.
The pelicans catch fish
Without wetting their beak;
The peers do what they wish,
Unworthy of favor they seek.
At sunrise on south hill
The attendants still wait;
Their hungry daughters feel ill,
Weeping their bitter fate.
[1]This was directed against Duke Gong of Cao who had three hundred worthless peers but only one hundred diligent attenndants in his court and who was impolite to Duke Wen of Jin in 641 B. C.
