King Cheng’s Self-criticism[1]
I blame myself for woes gone by
And guard against those of future nigh.
A wasp is a dangerous thing.
Why should I seek its painful sting?
At first only a wren is heard;
When it takes wing, it becomes a bird.
Unequal to hard tasks of the state,
I am again in a narrow strait.
[1] King Cheng acknowledged that he had erred and stated his purpose to be careful in the future; he would guard against the slightest beginning of evil and was penetrated with a sense of his own incompetencies. This piece might be considered as the conclusion of the service in the ancestral temple with which it and the previous three were connected.
