The Duke of Shao[1]
O leafy tree of pear!
Don’t clip or make it bare,
For once our Duke lodged there.
O leafy tree of pear!
Don’t break its branches bare,
For once our Duke rested there.
O leafy tree of pear!
Don’t bend its branches bare,
For once our Duke halted there.
[1]The Duke of Shao was a principal adherent of King Wen. The love of the people for the memory of the Duke of Shao made them love the tree beneath which he had rested.
