A Rejected Wife[1]
Gently blows eastern breeze
With rain ‘neath cloudy skies.
Let’s set our mind to please
And let no anger rise!
Who gathers plants to eat
Should keep the root in view.
Do not forget what’s meet
And me who’d die with you!
Slowly I go my way;
My heart feels sad and cold.
You go as far to say
Goodbye as the threshold.
Is lettuce bitter? Nay,
To me it seems e’en sweet.
Feasting on wedding day,
You two looks as brothers meet.
The by-stream is not clear,
Still we can see its bed.
Feasting your new wife dear,
You treat the old as dead.
Do not approach my dam,
Nor move my net away!
Rejected as I am,
What more have I to say?
When the river was deep,
I crossed by raft or boat;
When ‘t was shallow, I’d keep
Myself aswim or afloat.
I would have spared no breath
To get what we did need;
Wherever I saw death,
I would help with all speed.
You loved me not as mate;
Instead you gave me hell.
My virtue caused you hate
As wares which did not sell.
In days of poverty
Together we shared woe
Now in prosperity
I seem your poison slow.
I’ve vegetables dried
Against the winter cold.
Feast them with your new bride,
Not your former wife old.
You beat and scolded me
And gave me only pain.
The past is gone, I see,
And no love will remain.
[1]This was the plaint of a wife rejected and supplanted by another whom she addressed in lines 5—6 of the 3rd stanza.
