载驰载驱，

大夫君子，

赶着马儿快些走，
回来吊问我卫侯。
赶着马儿路悠悠，
走到漕邑城门楼。
许国大夫匆忙来，
让我心里添忧愁。
对我做法都摇头，
可我不能往回走。
你的想法不算好，
我的做法近可求。
对我做法都反对，
决不渡河再回头。
你的想法不算好，
我的计划有理由。
登上那个高山岗，
采些贝母慰忧伤。
女人虽然多想法，
各有理由和主张。
许国大夫反对我，
真是幼稚又愚妄。
我正行走原野上，
麦苗油油长得旺。
奔告大国来帮忙，
靠着谁来救危亡。
大夫君子众人们，
不要再把我阻挡。
你们纵有好计策，
不如我去走一趟。

I gallop while I go
To share my brother’s woe.
I ride down a long road
To my brother’s abode.
The deputies will thwart
My plan and fret my heart.
“Although you say me nay,
I won’t go back the other way.
Conservative are you
While farsight’d is my view?”
“Although you say me nay,
I won’t stop on my way.
Conservative are you,
I can’t accept your view.”
I climb the sloping mound
To pick toad-lilies round.
Of woman don’t make light!
My heart knows what is right.
My countrymen put blame
On me and feel no shame.
I go across the plains;
Thick and green grow the grains.
I’ll plead to mighty land,
Who’d hold out helping hand.
“Deputies, don’t you see
The fault lies not with me?
Whatever may think you,
It’s not so good as my view.”
[1]Baroness Mu of Xu, daughter of Duchess Xuan Jiang (See Poem“Scandals”) of Wei,complained that the deputies of Xu did not allow her to go back to Wei to condole with her brother Duke Wen on the desolation of his State after the death of Duke Dai in 659 B.C., and to appeal to a mighty State on its behalf. It was contrary, however, to the rules of propriety for a lady in her position to return to her native State, so she picked toad-lilies which might, it was said, assuage her sorrow.
