Duke Wu of Wei[1]

Behold by riverside

Green bamboos in high glee.

Our duke is dignified

Like polished ivory

And stone or jade refined.

With solemn gravity

And elevated mind,

The duke we love a lot

Should never be forgot.

Behold by riverside

Bamboos with soft green shade.

Our duke is dignified

When crowned with strings of jade

As bright as stars we find.

With solemn gravity

And elevated mind,

The duke we love a lot

Should never be forgot.

Behold by riverside

Bamboos so lush and green.

Our duke is dignified

With gold-or tin-like sheen.

With his sceptre in hand,

He is in gentle mood;

By his chariot he’d stand;

At jesting he is good,

But he is never rude.

[1]This song was written in praise of Duke Wu who ruled the State of Wei in 811—751 B. C. The duke cultivated the principles of government. The people increased in number, and others flocked to the State. In 770 B. C. when King You of Zhou was killed by a barbarian tribe, the duke led his army to the rescue of Zhou and rendered such great service against the enemy that King Ping appointed him a minister of the royal court.
