Duke Wen of Wei[1]
At dusk the four stars form a square;
It’s time to build a palace new.
The sun and shade determine where
To build the Palace at Chu,
To plant hazel and chestnut trees,
Fir, yew, plane, cypress. When cut down,
They may be used to make lutes to please The ducal crown.
The duke ascends the ruined wall
To view the site of capital
And where to build his palace hall.
He then surveys the mountain’s height
And comes down to see mulberries.
The fortune-teller says it’s right
And the duke is pleased with all these.
After the fall of vernal rain
The duke orders his groom to drive
His horse and cab with might and main.
At mulberry fields they arrive;
To farmers he is good indeed
He wishes husbandry to thrive
And three thousand horses to breed.
[1]After the defeat and death of Duke Yi of Wei in 659 B. C., Duke Wen succeeded him, moved the capital to Cao and built a new palace in Chu. As he was dilligent and sympa thetic with the people, the State of Wei became prosperous under his reign.
