帕布莉卡硕人
硕人其颀[1]，
衣锦褧[2]衣。
齐侯之子，
卫侯之妻，
东宫之妹，
邢侯之姨，
谭公维私[3]。
手如柔荑，
肤如凝脂，
领如蝤蛴[4]，
齿如瓠犀[5]，
螓[6]首蛾眉。
巧笑倩兮，
美目盼兮。
硕人敖敖，
说[7]于农郊。
四牡有骄，
朱[8]镳镳，
翟茀[9]以朝。
大夫夙退，
无使君劳。
河水洋洋，
北流活活，
施罛[10]，
鳣鲔发发，
葭菼[11]揭揭[12]，
庶姜孽孽[13]，
庶士有朅[14]。
有个美人身颀秀，
锦衣外面布衣罩。
她是齐侯的女儿，
卫侯的妻子，
太子的妹妹，
邢侯的小姨子，
谭公是她的妹夫。
手指像茅草的嫩芽，
皮肤像凝冻的白脂，
脖颈像白而长的蝤蛴，
牙齿像整齐的瓠瓜子，
前额方正眉细弯。
轻巧笑时酒窝动，
四顾望时眼波转。
有个美人身颀秀，
车子停歇在近郊。
四匹雄马气势骄，
马勒绸带红绸飘，
雉羽蔽车来上朝。
大夫可以早退朝，
不教君主多辛劳。
黄河流水浩洋洋，
向北流去哗哗响，
渔网撒向水中央，
鳣鱼鲔鱼全入网，
芦苇荻梗长正旺，
从嫁的姜女盛妆忙，
护送的武士气宇轩昂。

[2] 褧（jiǒng）：罩袍，披风。
[3] 私：古代女子称姊姐的丈夫曰私。
[4] 蝤蛴：天牛的幼虫，身体长而白。
[5] 瓠犀（hù xī）：葫芦籽，洁白而整齐。
[6] 螓（qín）：像蝉而比蝉小的一种虫，额头方正。
[7] 说：停止。
[8] 朱（fén）：系在马衔两边用来装饰的红绸。
[9] 翟茀（fú）：用山鸡毛装饰的车子。
[10] 罛（gū）：渔网。
[11] 葭菼（tǎn）：荻苇。
[12] 揭揭：高高上扬的样子。
[13] 孽孽：盛妆的样子。
[14] 朅（qiè）：英武敏健的样子。
The Duke’s Bride[1]
The buxom lady’s big and tall,
A cape o’er her robe of brocade.
Her father, brothers, husband all
Are dukes or marquis of high grade.
Like lard congealed her skin is tender,
Her fingers like soft blades of reed;
Like larva white her neck is slender,
Her teeth like rows of melon-seed,
Her forehead like a dragonfly’s,
Her arched brows curved like a bow.
Ah! Dark on white her speaking eyes,
Her cheeks with smiles and dimples glow,
The buxom lady goes along;
She passes outskirts to be wed.
Four steeds run vigorous and strong,
Their bits adorned with trappings red.
Her cab with pheasant-feathered screen
Proceeds to the court in array.
Retire, officials, from the scene!
Leave duke and her without delay!
The Yellow River wide and deep
Rolls northward its jubilant way.
When nets are played out, fishes leap
And splash and throw on reeds much spray.
Richly-dressed maids and warriors keep
Attendance on her bridal day.
[1]This was the first description of a beautiful lady in Chinese poetry. The beautiful lady was married to Duke Zhuang of Wei who reigned in 757—735 B. C. but she bore no children and brought up Duke Huan who was murdered by his half-brother in 718 B. C. (See Poem“A Farewell Song”)
