“鸡既鸣矣，
朝[1]既盈矣。”
“匪鸡则鸣，
苍蝇之声。”
“东方明矣，
朝既昌[2]矣。”
“匪东方则明，
月出之光。”
“虫飞薨薨[3]，
甘与子同梦。”
“会[4]且归矣，
无庶予子憎。”
“听见鸡叫了，
朝堂上的人该满了。”
“不是鸡在叫，
那是苍蝇闹。”
“看见东方亮了，
朝堂上的人该从了。”
“不是东方亮了，
是月亮发出的光。”
“虫飞嗡嗡嗡，
我愿和你同入梦。”
“朝会都要散啦，
别因我而被人憎。”

A Courtier and His Wife[1]
“Wake up!”she says,“Cocks crow.
The court is on the go.”
“It’s not the cock that cries,”
He says,“but humming flies.”
“The east is brightening;
The court is in full swing.”
“It’s not the east that’s bright
But the moon shedding light.”
“See buzzing insects fly.
It’s sweet in bed to lie.
But courtiers will not wait;
None likes you to be late.”
[1]This was a dialogue between a courtier and his wife. It was said that the dialogue might refer to the marquess of Qi (934—894 B. C.) and the marchioness.
