Why Not Enjoy? [1]
Uphill you have elm-trees;
Downhill you have elms white.
You have dress as you please.
Why not wear it with delight?
You have horses and car.
Why don’t you take a ride?
One day when dead you are,
Others will drive them with pride.
Uphill you’ve varnish trees;
Downhill trees rooted deep.
You have rooms as you please.
Why not clean them and sweep?
You have your drum and bell.
Why don’t you beat and ring?
One day when tolls your knell,
Joy to others they’ll bring.
Uphill you’ve chestnut trees;
Downhill trees with deep root.
You have wine as you please.
Why not play lyre and lute
To be cheerful and gay
And to prolong your bloom?
When you are dead one day,
Others will enter your room.
[1]This was a satire on the folly of not enjoying the good things and letting death put them into the hands of others.
