Lord Zhong of Qin[1]
The cab bells ring;
Dappled steeds neigh.
“Let ushers bring
In friends so gay!”
There’re varnish trees uphill
And chestnuts in lowland.
Friends see Lord Zhong sit still
Beside lute-playing band.
“If we do not enjoy today,
At eighty joy will pass away.”
There’re mulberries uphill
And willows in lowland.
Friends see Lord Zhong sit still
Beside his music band.
“If we do not enjoy today,
We’ll regret when life ebbs away.”
[1]This song celebrated the pleasures of Lord Zhong of Qin, who, made a great officer of the court by King Xuan in 826 B. C., began to turn Qin from a barbarian state to a music-lov ing civilized one, which unified China and founded the Empire of Qin in 221 B. C.
