The golden orioles flew

Who’s buried with Duke Mu?
The eldest of the three.
This eldest worthy son
Could be rivaled by none.
Coming to the graveside,
Who’d not be terrified?
O good Heavens on high,
Why should the worthy die?

Who not have been slain?

And lit on mulberry.
Who’s buried with Duke Mu?
The second of the three.
The second worthy son
Could be equalled by none.
Coming to the graveside,

And lit on the thorn tree.
Who’s buried with Duke Mu?
The youngest of the three.
The youngest worthy son
Could be surpassed by none.
Coming to the graveside,
Who’d not be terrified?
O good Heavens on high,
Why should the worthy die?
If he could live again,
Who would not have been slain?
[1]The three worthies were buried alive together with 174 others in the same grave with Duke Mu of Qin in 620 B. C. They were not so free as the golden oriole.
