东门之杨
东门之杨,
其叶牂牂[1]。
昏以为期,
明星煌煌。
东门之杨,
其叶肺肺[2]。
昏以为期,
明星晢晢[3]。
东门外的杨树,
叶子沙沙响。
约定在黄昏的时候,
长庚星闪闪发光。
东门外的杨树,
叶子哗哗响。
约定在黄昏的时候,
长庚星发光灼灼。

[1] 牂牂(zāng zāng):风吹树叶的声音。
[2] 肺肺:同“牂牂”。
[3] 晢晢(zhé zhé):明亮的样子。
To a Weaving Maiden[1]
At eastern gate we could
Steep hemp in river long.
O maiden fair and good,
To you I’ll sing a song.
At eastern gate we could
Steep nettle in the creek.
O maiden fair and good,
To you I wish to speak.
At eastern gate we could
Steep in the moat rush-rope.
O maiden fair and good,
On you I hang my hope.
[1]The stalks of the hemp had to be steeped, preparatory to getting the threads or filaments from them so that the maiden might weave clothes.
